TIPS FOR HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY GREEN & SUSTAINABLE
1) Shop for green gifts at local craft fairs and artisans shops. Look for things that are made from recycled materials such as value added products made of wood, recycled fabrics, tires, paper, glass, candy wrappers, old LP records, magazines, used utensils and waste plant materials.
2) Do not buy electronic toys or gifts that require batteries. Even rechargeable batteries are bad because they end up in the waste sites anyway once they are burned out.
3) Shop for previously owned green gifts such as hemp clothing; hemp lasts almost forever, so a used clothing item made of hemp still has years of life in it. Used books and used knick knack, art, carvings and collectables. Garage sales and flea markets are full of really interesting stuff that would make a great gift. Sometimes a very amusing gift can be found in these venues.
4)LED LIGHTS are are must for green decorating. They use up to 95% less energy than standard lights and they look awesome too. They do cost a little more, but if money is tight this year, then get your LED holiday lights after Christmas, they are 1/2 price then.
5) No paper wrapping paper - it is just as much fun to unwrap a gift that is folded up in brightly colored cloth, magazine or comic pages or old clothing items. Instead of using tape, just tie the parcel up with natural fabric ties or string. Take a hike in a park or wooded area and find natural decorations for your gifts, berries, cones, bark, leaves, fronds and even stones can be arranged and tied to your naturally wrapped gift. Just use fabrics from around your house, old clothes, sheets, blankets, jeans etc. Color can be added with water based paints and every gift ends up looking totally unique.
6) For your Christmas tree, why not buy a used artificial tree. Garage sales are full of these. Another alternative to a cut live tree is to buy a potted live tree that gets brought in for just 5 days for the holiday and then put outside again to live on for Christmases to come. Christmas decorations are definitely way more fun to make yourself instead of buying from a mass manufacturer off shore somewhere. We have made decorations every year for 25 years and we now have a great collection from all our kids from all those wonderful years. Materials to make decorations from are paper, wood, food packaging materials, homemade salt & flour play dough, cookie dough, pastry dough, clay, plant materials.
7) Buy your turkey or ham from a store or farm that sells locally raised organic meat and while you're at it, why not buy everything for your holiday dinner organic. Organic food is a very important part of the green revolution so why not support the technically dedicated and talented green farmers that are everywhere these days.
8) Decorate a special tree outside your window display that is FOR THE BIRDS You can make your own edible decorations for the wildlife using bread pieces, cereal, seeds, nuts and grains mixed with warm fat like melted lard or peanut butter. Pour the mixture into any kind of container to mold with a string running a loop through the mix. When cool, string them up in your wildlife tree and watch the party begin.
9) BUY LESS STUFF - let's face it, we have all been over doing it and it would be OK to cut back. Plan more activities, like nature hikes or a wildlife support activity to fill the time where more preset opening would have been. Everyone will feel good about a little fresh air adventure. Start a new family tradition of going out for a walk.
10) Re-Gift an item that is not used. Sometimes a new collectable can be made from a tired old knick knack just by touching it up with metalic or irridescent paints, beads, feathers and glitter. Kids are particularly great at this, but artist or creative crafters will turn out some pretty special OOAK gifts too. Some of our MOST FUN HOLIDAYS were ones where we HAD to buy & refurbish something old. We had so many laughs, I'll always remember that year. All the others are a blur of over consumption.
