WIND POWER IN MY BACKYARD?
Why NOT!
Mace Kitchen, a young friend of ours who has been a great childhood buddy of my kids, is presently working on a wind generating farm proposal site that is in the works right here in British Columbia, Canada. This wind farm has been proposed for the Prince Rupert area on the Northern tip of Vancouver Island. At this point in time, the permit process has required the proposed Wind Farm Company to put up several test wind mills and monitor wind speeds for 3 years. If sufficient wind power is revealed by the statistics gathered by these wind speed monitors, then the final permit to install a huge wind farm will be granted. I will keep this article updated as I hear how this new addition to our BC power grid is coming along.
It's exciting to hear that we are having some movement towards alternative and sustainable power sources in BC. Alberta has been at it for awhile now and so has Denmark. Both these regions have enormous wind generated power infrastructures up & running. Many Alberta farms are now generating their own power and selling the excess electricity back to their communities. It is heartening to see these changes taking place in my lifetime.
So what's available to us little guys these days? My research into who is doing wind power generation in 2009 led me to wonder. So I went shopping for wind power and found an exciting number and variety of companies and individuals who are retailing wind power equipment, plans and electronics and shipping worldwide. Wind generators of all sizes & types are already selling like hot cakes, to use an old expression.
I think once the greater population sees how everyday wind power can be, for a region, a town, a city or an individual home or business, we are going to see a world just a spinning with wind mill propellers. After all, it IS getting windier due to global warming; as a sailor here on BC waters, let me tell you; The WIND IS GETTING WILD!
So we might as well start harnessing this wild new wind to make power and we also could be using the power of the ripper tidal currents that we experience all over the coast. Denmark has competed a giant wind generating farm out in their ocean that provides 30% of the nations power needs! It makes quite a bit more sense than damming more rivers, flooding more land in a time when we may lose land mass to rising tides. Wind power generators are also way more intelligent than natural gas & coal generators that have been revving up all over the province to cope with the high price of oil.
I guess the oil moguls will not be happy about this. The oil industry, as everyone by now knows, is the commander in chief of Canada and they have long been manipulating what is and is not available to us. We would all be driving electric cars by now I'm sure, if the oil industry did not have so MUCH to lose.
As always, we citizens must take the lead, demanding that subsidies for energy research & development be allocated to green energy companies that are trying to bring a non polluting & renewable and cheap energy resourse to the world, to Canada and to us, right in our own back yards.
I have made a new page here at www.toxinfreeclothes.ca that lists wind power generating equipment, actual wind turbines (C$835 US $659), plans for wind generator systems and all kinds of accessories and electronic parts for wind generation.
